What I'm Looking Forward To

As a writer, speaker, mom, there is always something I'm looking forward to.

On my list now:
  1. Alyssa's 2nd birthday, March 16
  2. The 100th Anniversary of the Titanic...because I get to talk about my novel, By the Light of the Silvery Moon
  3. The Allume Conference (awesome blogging conference formerly known as Relevent)
Yes, there are other things...but at this moment THOSE things bring excited bubbles to my stomach. And the cool thing is that I get to meet many of YOU at Allume.

I'll be there, and I hope to meet you!

I'm excited about Allume because I get to meet many of my writing/blogging friends face-to-face.

I get to make new friends.

I won't have to cook, clean or wipe noses.

I get to share a topic that's a passion of mine: balancing writing and family.

I'm going to be inspired...I just know it.

If you're interested... register for Allume Social here! (tickets go on sale March 1st at midnight, EST).

They go FAST! I tried to get one last year and missed out. This year I twisted Sarah Mae's arm to let me on the speaker team so that wouldn't happen. :)

Hope to see you there!

Podcasts for Living Inspired Radio: Jon S. Lewis and Rosslyn Elliott

Winners for this week's show are posted below!!

Download Jon's Interview Here

It's hard to find good books for boys, but as soon as I showed my teenage son Jon's books he was excited to read them. Jon understands the comic book world--it's a passion for him--so he's able to connect with boys on a level that most authors can't. If you have a boy who doesn't like to read, check out Jon's books. I think they'll pique their interest!

Be sure to keep up with Jon via Twitter @JonSLewis

To get your copy of Alienation, order here. It's also available on the Kindle

Download Rosslyn's Interview Here

Every time I talk to Rosslyn I feel as if I've found a kindred soul. I LOVE how she's taken the true stories of the Hanby Family and wove them into fiction. I get excited about her stories because I can see how passionate she is about this family and her research. She's also a fantastic writer. Check out this first line from Sweeter than Birdsong: "Her customary walk across the college quadrangle had become an executioner's march. " How could you put the book down after reading that?

Be sure to check out Rosslyn's blog http://www.inkhornblue.blogspot.com/ and follow her on Twitter @RosslynElliott

To get your copy of Sweeter Than Birdsong, order here. Also available on the Kindle.

Congratulations to Maxie who won a copy of Jon's book Alienation and Lane Hill House who won a copy of Rosslyn's book Sweeter Than Birdsong. Please e-mail your addresses to my assistant Christen (ckrumm@litfusegroup.com).

Podcasts for Living Inspired Radio: Kathryn Bechen and Karen Linamen

Winners from this week's show are posted below!

Sometimes we want God to do something new, but sometimes that "new" is just an extension of what He's already started in our lives. I love how Kathryn shares how God grew a book out of what He's already gifted her at: Organization! Kathryn gives some great--and simple!--tips for organizing small spaces. I know I've already incorporated a few!

Be sure to check out Kathryn's blog  www.KathrynBechenINK.com and follow Kathryn on Twitter @KathrynBechen  for more organizing tips and tricks!

Pick up your copy of Small Space Organizing here also available for your Kindle

When I talk to Karen I can hear a smile in her voice, and when you read her writing there is no different. What I love about Karen is she offers up truth with a side of chocolate. She's a girlfriend who's walking beside us saying, "Yes, I deal with the same thing, and let me tell you what really helps." The one thing that stood out to is the truth that there's a sweetness we can find with Jesus even in the Rocky Road of life. Amen!

Be sure to check out Karen's website http://www.karenlinamen.com/ and follow her on Twitter @KarenLinamen for your daily dose of funny!

Pick up your copy of The Chocolate Diaries here also available on the Kindle

Congratulations to Apple Blossom who won a copy of Kathryn's book Small Space Organizing and Linda who won a copy of Karen's book The Chocolate Diaries! Please e-mail your addresses to my assistant Christen  (ckrumm@litfusegroup.com).

Your Audience

We've talked about marketing and publicity before, but for the next few days I'd like to discuss how you reach YOUR audience.

1. Let's talk about who your audience is.

2. Let's talk about unique ways you reach them.

According to Alexa.com, here is info on who is visiting my website the most: "Based on internet averages, triciagoyer.com is visited more frequently by females who are in the age range 25-34, have children, are
college educated and browse this site from home." Looking at other information Alexa told me, the websites they visit before and after my site is Facebook.

When I think of my reader, I often think of real women I know to help me picture "her" in my mind. One is Alana. She's a friend from church who's married to a great guy from Guatemala. They are involved in missions outreach in his home country. She's college educated but put her career aside to raise her two kids. At church we chat about my new books and the research behind them. She's invited me to her home to talk to other young moms about homeschooling. She posts adorable photos of her kids on Facebook and she works at a preschool part time, mostly because she likes the connection with other moms and kids. I have readers from other age groups/lifestyles, but I know that I have a nice following from this audience.

There are obvious ways I connect with them:
-By doing guest blogs on mommy and homeschooling sites
-By blogging about marriage and family on my blog (I throw books stuff in now and again :)
-By posting about my writing (which is following my dream), life and family on Facebook and Twitter
-By hosting Facebook contests

I also try to be aware of other places my core readers/followers are congregating. One of those places is www.Pinterest.com ... what is Pineterest?

From their website: "Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes. Best of all, you can browse pinboards created by other people. Browsing pinboards is a fun way to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests." You can see my page here: http://pinterest.com/triciagoyer/

I've discovered that you can "pin" anything to your "Bulletin boards" that has a photo. I "pin" my books under subject headings like "World War II" or "Amish." I also started spending five-ten minutes each day finding old blog posts and "pinning" them. For example, recently I pinned a blog post from July 2010 on "How to Be a Better Lover" to my Marriage board. In the first few hours I pinned it over 250 people went and viewed that old blog post. It's continued to get a few hundred views each week. If people like your pins they repin them on their boards. And then people look at their boards and repin them too. Sweet!

Recently, because of things like Pinterest and Facebook parties, the daily views on my blog/website have jumped from an average of 6,000 page views a month to over 11,000 in November. I've also seen my book sales numbers growing, too. Yeah! And the best part is it's FUN for me! (Yes, I find Facebook and Twitter fun, too.) Because I like it I don't feel like I'm marketing (so much) and readers don't feel that I'm only concerned with trying to sell them something.

Even though the majority of books I write are fiction, I'm making a connection with my main readership who connect with me over family and real-life issues, and then run out to buy my novels. They also buy my books for their parents and grandparents, too. Which I love!

All that to say, instead of casting a wide net, and attempting to reach a variety of readers, I've been doing more to connect with those who respond most positively to ME and my books. For the next few days let's talk about who YOUR audience is AND unique ways you've discovering to connect with them.

Beautiful Battle: A Woman's Guide to Spiritaual Warfare

My sweet friend Mary DeMuth has a book coming out that I'm eager to read.

Beautiful Battle: A Woman's Guide to Spiritual Warfare

Mary will be on my radio show March 22nd. But here's a little about the book before then...

The description:

Warfare...hell...demons... I’m just trying to drive my kids to school and stay on top of the laundry. What does any of that have to do with me?

You’ve heard plenty of talk about evil. You’ve heard about binding Satan and breaking strongholds and calling demons by name. You’ve heard you should claim your victory in Christ…but you’re not really sure how to do that.

This isn’t a book about evil.

With passion and strength, Mary DeMuth brings balance and insight to the often murky realm of spiritual warfare. As you embrace the abundant life to which God calls his daughters, she’ll tell you why your voice matters for eternity. And on the darkest days, you’ll know that spiritual warfare is about bowing before the Creator, not cowering before the devil. It’s about finding freedom and beauty in the midst of devastation. It’s about the power of God to heal our hearts, to move mountains, to intercede when we’re weary. It’s about crucifixion and a defiant, glorious resurrection.

It’s about truth.

It’s about power.

Join Mary in the beautiful battle, and be renewed on the journey.

And here are some videos sharing Mary's heart: http://www.marydemuth.com/2012/01/the-world-premier-of-the-beautiful-battle-trailers/

I also asked Mary to share a little more ...
Q: What is one thing that surprised you about writing Beautiful Battle?

A: How universal this warfare is. As I heard other people’s stories and delved into my own, I realized that everyone on this earth faces spiritual battle. We are often not aware of it. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

I experienced spiritual warfare as I wrote the book and as it releases. I’d so appreciate your prayers.

But even more than that, as I finished the book, I realized that no matter what, God is bigger. He is greater than our enemy and our enemies. He is greater than our worries. He is greater than our lives. He is greater than anything we can conceive of. Because of that, we can have peace and rest in his capability.

Q: What Scripture do you turn to first when you feel the battles of life heating up?

A: For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12, NLT

It’s important that we remember that our supreme conflict isn’t with others. It’s with the evil forces swirling around us. Once I counseled with a couple who were fighting something fierce. As we talked through the issue, I ended up realizing that they were turning on each other and not on their real enemy. I said something like, “Your real enemy is Satan, and he wants to destroy your relationship. Choose to turn away from blaming each other, and instead focus on who you really need to blame.” As a result, the couple re-engaged and stopped their cycle of arguments.

Thank you, Mary!

Combating Unwanted Feelings

Since sharing my story about being attracted to an old flame in my book Generation NeXt Marriage, I've received several emails from women (and men) about how to handle unwanted attraction. Some have written in because they are attracted to a married man (or woman) or because they're married and are either involved in (or considering) an emotional or physical relationship with someone other than their spouse.

This was my suggestion to one such person who was single and attracted to a married man:

Jocelyn*,

Thanks so much for writing.

First of all, attractions (she was attracted to a married man) like the one you mentioned are normal. There will ALWAYS be people we're most attracted to. Whether we are single or married there will be those who have looks or a personality that we like. These feelings can be fostered when we are single and when they are single, but the hard part is turning them off.

There are a few things that you can do. If those feelings are there don't dwell on them. When you are near him and feel those feeling emerging, start praying for this man's marriage and family, as hard as it can be.

Pray even more for your future husband. Pray he can overcome temptation and attractions where ever he is.

I also highly recommend the book, Every Single Woman's Battle. There are other books by Shannon Ethridge I highly recommend, too--just check out her website. She gives great tips on how to deal with our crazy emotions!

Also, know that like weeds, unhealthy emotions will die if we don't nurture and water them. Pray that Jesus will help you keep every thought captive in obedience to Him!

Blessings!
Tricia Goyer

What about you? What advice would you give? Or if you found yourself attracted to someone already married (or someone other than your spouse), what did you do?

In this practical book, readers will learn how to
-perform a room-by-room audit of their space to see if it's functioning at its best
-make the most of existing storage space and find clever ways to add more
-find creative ways to arrange furnishings and accessories that maximize space and bring harmony and style to the home.

I Am For Life

I was in a meeting recently when a well-respected Christian leader said a statement that hasn't left my mind since. "If Roe vs. Wade were overturned tomorrow, then what? Is the church--the Christian community--prepared to care for those children?"

He went on to another topic, but inside I shouted, "Of course! There are wonderful Christian people out there who'd love to adopt a sweet little baby." I mean, who wouldn't?

But the more I thought about it worries sunk in. Would they? If I were to call one hundred of my closest friends and told them I knew a teen mom who was looking for a home for their child...would they open their homes? Their hearts?

I hope the majority would, but then I got to thinking. What about today? Is there more each one of us can do today to prepare? Maybe my friends shouldn't wait for me to call them. Maybe God's already been talking to their hearts.

Has He been speaking to your heart, friend? Have you been listening?

Have you looked into adoption? Have you considered the cost? Have you considered the reward?

Have you donated money to a crisis pregnancy center? Have you sacrificed financially until you can feel it? Have you volunteered? Have you turned off the TV, got off Facebook, and asked to help?

Have you reached out to a teen mom? Have you called up a friend whose daughter is facing a crisis pregnancy and offered a listening ear? Have you considered starting a support group for teen moms in your church or community? Have you bought diapers, donated baby clothes, or provided a meal to help an overwhelmed young woman? Have you offered to babysit? Have you become her friend? Have you taken her to the park and hung out just to talk about teething and diaper rash and first words?

Have you reached out to the children of a single mom? Have you taken them to pizza? Attended their basketball games? Offered to coach their teams?

Have you considered opening your home to foster care? Have you looked past your own heartache over having a child in your home for only a time and considered, instead, the impact you could have for a season?

Have you considered adopting a child from the foster care system, especially those who are older, ethnically diverse, in a sibling group or disabled (since those are hardest to place).

Have you considered volunteering in a program that offers hope and help to teens who age out of the foster care system? Have you taken time to mentor a young man or women who have no family to call their own?

Do you recognize that caring for life also means feeding the hungry, assisting the alien, befriending a widow, and visiting the lonely?

Have you felt the tug on your heart but ignored it?
Have your read the Scriptures, but then put the Bible back on the bookshelf and walked away?

“When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”
Psalm 139:16

Jacob answered, 'They are the children God has graciously given your servant.”
Genesis 33:5

Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him.
Psalm 127:3-5

For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Ephesians 2:10

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

 James 1:27
“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
Matthew 25:37-40

What about you, friend? Are you willing to open your home? Your heart?

Are you for life?

Are you for LIFE?

What's Up With Church?

{source}
I can still remember being nine-years-old and attending the small, white church on Highway 97 north of Weed, California. New to church, I was impressed with the caring people, fun Sunday School lessons, and new friends. These people were different than others I knew. They smiled, and they were full of joy. Yet as my teen years neared the last thing I wanted was to be around those people. Why? I was sexually active with my boyfriend and was watching the wrong types of movies. Whenever I was around church goers, the guilt was strong. I felt as if they could see right into my soul.

Accountability with believers is one reason why God established church. He wants us to have people in our lives who will show us the right way, and point out areas where we've strayed off the path.

Once I rededicated my life to God, church is the first place I returned to, and even though I was a pregnant teen, the people there welcomed me with open arms.

How about you? Do you need the accountability of Christians in your life? We all do. And if that's not convincing enough, here are seven other reasons why church is important.

1. To connect with God. It's true we don't need to be in church to get close to Him, but church helps us step out of our busy lives and focus on God for a moment. Think about a close friend. What if she told you she had something super important to tell you? You'd most likely turn off the Television, set your phone aside, get off the computer and focus on her. Church does the same thing for us. It helps us show God that He's the priority and we're paying attention.

2. To understand what you believe better. The purpose of a pastor or youth pastor's sermon is to explain the Bible and how it applies to real life. I'm amazed that EVERY time I listen to a sermon I learn something about God. As someone who's been a Christian for 22 years, I know that I'll continue to learn as I continue to listen.

3. To spend time with close friends. I'm not too ashamed to admit it, there were seasons when my friends were the main reason I went to church--and that's okay. Even though these friends had struggles of their own, the fact that they were seeking God--and were open to Him--meant something. All these years later my "church friends" are still seeking and serving God. Likewise, most of my "unchurched friends" are still drinking, partying, and trying to find happiness in a broken world. It's okay to spend time with these friends, and church is a great place to connect.

4. To be inspired. I'm inspired when I see others loving God with passion. When I'm feeling down, going to church and seeing people who love God and are excited about serving him pumps me up.

5. To volunteer. In junior high I volunteered in the church nursery. My teenage son likes to work on the media panel for children's church. Church is a great place to learn service. Churches need people to join in the work, and working alongside others provides skills and unity.

6. To be mentored. I can still name the people who mentored me and helped me on the right paths. These people are still important to me. Because of their mentoring my life was changed, and I now like to offer the same personal encouragement to others.

7. Because God said so. Hebrews 10:25 says, "And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near" (NLT). God designed the church and wants us to be a part of it. He knows the benefits. He knows the greater good. He knows that when we surround ourselves with other believers and seek Him on Sundays, our lives are better for it. God knows!

Now, how about you? Why do you go to church? How does church impact your life?

The Chasing Mona Lisa Mom

{source}
As a homeschooling mom I never struggled with figuring out what I wanted my kids to learn. The problem came with knowing where to stop. After sitting down one year to figure out my high schooler’s schedule, I came up with fourteen subjects. FOURTEEN! Uh, I had a trim that down a little bit.

I have the same problem when I look at Amanda's Unit Studies: Horses, Gardens, Space, oh my! I want to do it all.

As a historical writer I’ve often had the same problem. It’s easy to dig into research, it’s hard to know when to stop and write the book. Thankfully for my new novel, Chasing Mona Lisa , I had a co-writer to help with the process. Mike Yorkey (former editor of Focus on the Family Magazine ) is also a WWII history buff. He also lived in Switzerland with his wife Nicole who is Swiss.

What I love about historical fiction is feeling as if I’m living history. With fiction you don’t just learn facts and dates. Readers get to experience thoughts and emotions similar to those who lived during that time.

I’ve also discovered that by having my teens read a novel, it’s like adding in another “subject” in my own homeschooling classroom while my kids think they’re just in for a fun read!

Here are a few things we discovered about France, August 1944 while we were researching  Chasing Mona Lisa :

• the Nazis bought up tons of art as well as confiscated magnificent pieces from Jewish families

• the Parisians rose up and fought the Nazis in the days leading up to Liberation

• Paris was liberated without much warfare or bloodshed

• the Louvre curators hid the Mona Lisa and other famous pieces in their collection during the war

• the Mona Lisa was moved around like a pea in a shell game and was hung in a girl’s bedroom during the war

• Allen Dulles, an American, ran a spy network in Switzerland. The OSS was the precursor to the CIA

• there was skimming and “Swiss bank accounts” among the Nazis (I bet you’re not surprised!)

Mike and I learned much more in the process, and I've enjoyed sharing it with my teens. Chasing Mona Lisa is a book you can read with your teenagers as you study France with your whole family!

Courageous Love

Years after I'd been married I learned something about love. Shaunti Feldham talked about it in For Women Only and Emerson Eggerich paid a lot of attention to it in his book Love and Respect. Did you guess?

What I learned is that men receive love through respect. It's their language. It's what makes them feel valuable!

One of my favorite movies from last year was Courageous. While I enjoyed it as a woman, this movie spoke to men in this language of respect. It urged them to rise to the challenge of becoming a Courageous father and husband by serving their families well. Even months later scenes replay through my mind of the men in that movie setting their jaw and stepping forward to excel in the job God created for them. I was even blessed to interview Ken Bevel, one of the actors. You can listen to that interview here .

This Valentine's Day I want to encourage us to speak love to our husbands in a way they'll understand. I'll even reward you for it!

I invite you to leave a comment about something you RESPECT about your husband. Then on February 14th, I'm going to choose nine of you to receive a FREE copy of the Courageous DVD!

Whether you're one of the lucky winners or not, make sure you sit down with him and read your post! Your words of respect will hopefully go a long way!

(And a special thanks for our friends at Courageous for providing the DVDs!)

Writing advice from C.S. Lewis

{source}
Sibella Giorello posted this on her blog. Love it.

In 1959, an American schoolgirl appealed to C. S. Lewis for writing advice, and he sent her a list of eight rules for good writing:

 1. Turn off the radio [and television].

 2. Read good books and avoid most magazines.

 3. Write with the ear, not the eye. Make every sentence
      sound good.

 4. Write only about things that interest you. If you have no
interests, you won't ever be a writer.

 5. Be clear. Remember that readers can't know your mind. Don't forget to tell them exactly what they
need to know to understand you.

 6. Save odds and ends of writing attempts, because you may be able to use them later.

 7. You need a well-trained sense of word-rhythm, and the noise of a typewriter will interfere.

 8. Know the meaning of every word you use.

What about you? What is the best writing advice you've received?

Announcing Allume Social!

A few months ago I announced I was going to be speaking at the Relevant conference in October. I've just received word I won't be speaking at Relevant. Sigh.

That's because Relevant has a new name. Relevant is now Allume Social! (And, yes, I will be speaking there!)

Why? Relevant is a common name in Christian communities. Allume Social is anything but common! (You can read more of the details at Sarah Mae's blog here.)

Allume:
Allume is the community that is all about Christ invading our souls and us reflecting His light out to the world, via the online space and in our spheres of influence - home and beyond.  At Allume you'll find articles, podcasts, videos, and all kinds of goodness to encourage you in the Light.

Allume Social:
Allume social is the Christian women's social media conference that focuses on ministering to the woman, the blogger, the story teller. We want to love well, encourage, and spur women on to shine the Light that lives within them via the online space.
TONIGHT you can learn more about Allume Social. Join the Twitter party where leaders will be answering questions, giving out prizes, and having fun!
Tuesday, 9pm EST #allume

Here's more information:

How to Make Today Truly Miserable (Unofficial Unrecommended List)

{source}

  1. Open your eyes and think of all you didn't get done yesterday.
  2. Assume the worst when your husband asks, “So do you have any plans today?” As if you didn't have a huge to-do list every day.
  3. Push aside your Bible reading and jump into sorting that stinky pile of laundry.
  4. Remember what it used to feel like to wear your skinny, skinny jeans.
  5. Compare your kids to the star athletes and whiz kids your neighbors have.
  6. Compare your house/office/yard to the awesome pics continually reposted on @pinterest.
  7. Walk the mall and point out all the things you wish you had money to buy.

Or

  1. Thank God for what your new day holds.
  2. Give your husband a hug and ask if he has something special in mind. If he doesn't, tell him you do.
  3. Take time to read your Bible and asking the Creator of the Universe to guide your day.
  4. Appreciate your health and pray and ask God to help you in all areas you are weak.
  5. Hug your kids and tell them what you appreciate most about who God made them to be.
  6. Relax in your favorite part of your house for ten minutes and thank God for what He's provided.
  7. Go through your closet and pull out clothes you haven't worn in a while and take them to GoodWill.

Three Perfect Gifts for Your Parents (a guide for teens)

Sometimes it's easy to forget parents are human. They mess up and hope you don't see. They act up and hope you'll forgive them (even if they shrink back from asking forgiveness). They get tired and cranky, know it, and feel bad about it.

Here are three perfect gifts you can give them during this time.
1. Understanding. If you see one of your parents messing up tell him/her that you're not perfect either but you appreciate what they do, and how they try.

2. Grace. Wait until the difficult moment passes and later offer a hug. Tell your parent that it must be hard having his/her role.

3. An offering. When you see that your parent is tired offer to do a small chore, make a cup of tea or suggest you watch his/her favorite movie together. It's amazing how those little things can brighten
someone's day!
