Books...Books...

Let Them Eat Cake By Sandra Byrd

Lexi Stuart is at a critical crossroads. She's done with college but still living at home, ready to launch a career but unable to find a job, and solidly stalled between boyfriends.

A lighthearted conversation in French with the manager of her favorite bakery may turn into a job offer. But the actual glamour is minimal: the pay is less than generous, her co-workers are skeptical, her bank account remains vertically-challenged, and her parents are perpetually disappointed. Her only comfort comes from the flirtatious baker she has her eye on-but even may not be who he seems to be!

So when a handsome young executive dashes into the bakery to pick up his high-profile company's special order for an important meeting-an order Lexi has flubbed- she finally gives up her compulsion to please. Instead of trying to fulfill everyone else's expectations for her life, Lexi embarks on an adventure in trusting God with her future-très bon!

Check out the contest at http://www.tameraalexander.com/ .

From A Distance, the first book in Tamera’s next historical series (Timber Ridge Reflections) releases in spring 2008.

About the Book: Though loss is often marked in a single moment, letting go of someone you love can take a lifetime...

The threat of war--and a final request--send Véronique Girard from France to a distant and uninviting country. In the Colorado Territory, she searches for the man who has held her heart since childhood--her father. Pierre Girard left Paris for the Americas to seek his fortune in fur trading, vowing to send for his wife and daughter. But twenty-five years have passed and his vow remains unfulfilled. Sifting through shards of broken promises, Véronique embarks on a dangerous search for a man she scarcely remembers.

His grief finally healed, Jack Brennan is moving on with life. After years of guiding families west, he is now working as a freighter to the mining towns surrounding Willow Springs. What he doesn't count on is an unexpected traveling companion on his trips up into the mountains, and how one woman's search will cause havoc with his plans... and his life.

Endorsements:
"Alexander again delivers a most amazing story. The characters are more than words on the page; they become real people. Though there are French words sprinkled throughout the story, they enhance the emotions rather than distract the reader." --Romantic Times"...a rich historical romance by possibly the best new writer in this subgenre." --Library Journal"

ACFW...Heart Friends!

This years conference was wonderful because it seem like a mix of "returning" and "taking the next step."

The returning happened because I was able to room with my dear friend and mentor, Robin Gunn. ( Pictured left with Sarah Sumpolec (left) and myself--very serious here!) I met Robin at Mt. Hermon in 1993. I was 22-years-old. I'm not sure why but Robin chose to care for and mentor me. We became part of an intimate prayer group. She encouraged me and gave me wise advice many times over the years.

During the first worship service, the tears came. My heart filled with thankfulness to God as I thought about where I was then and where I was now. I thought about my role teaching the Historical Track ... and being in the position of helping others as I was helped. In fact, I introduced Robin to one person I've mentored as "this is your literary granddaughter." Is that cool or what?!

But Robin's smiling face wasn't the only one I was excited to see. There is a group of Gen Xers who have helped me extensively on my books--giving me input and editing either my non-fiction, fiction, (or in Cara's case) both! It was awesome to hug my cyber friends Cara Putman, Allison Wilson, Michelle Sutton, Amy Wallace, and Gina Conroy for the FIRST TIME face-to-face. And ... there were many, many others who I met whose DAUGHTERS gave me input for My Life, Unscripted and the teen version of Max Lucado's 3:16.

Then there is the joy of seeing my amazing agent Janet Grant and my other fun writing friends like Sarah Sumpolec, Susie Warren, Meredith Efken, Jim Rubart, Julie Carobini, Camy Tang, and Ocieanna Fleiss ... and dozens more I can't even begin to list!

So, of course, more tears came during the next worship service as I looked around at the faces of my friends. I literally had to close my eyes, because every time I noticed another face in the crowd the tears of joy would come again. (And I'm not usually a crying person!)

The advice I always give to new people attending conferences is NOT to focus only on the editors and agents. While they are WONDERFUL ... I've developed some of the deepest friendships of my life with those who I've met through God's divine appointments.

Of course, "the next step" part of it was the teaching. It's the most I've done at one conference and I had a FANTASTIC time. I had the best class ... seriously. They were so warm and receptive. Historical Fiction writers ROCK!

ACFW...It's taking a while to process!

My mind is so full of everything I want to share that I thought I'd share a few things at a time ... there is so much!

First of all, my most meaningful moment was not centered on writing, but on our adoption. We've been doing paperwork to adopt for China for 1 1/2 years. It's been slowed down by crazy things like a lost homestudy (the immigration office moved mid-paperwork) and unsatisfactory fingerprints. On Thursday Susan Downs, who has been praying for me, found me and told me she was continuing to pray. It was awesome to know that there was someone there who knew my heart and continued to pray for me.

Then, Saturday after the banquet, and fun time with my friends, I discovered my husband had been trying to reach me. He'd called 5-6 times. I called him and he excitedly told me our paperwork was in! It had been mailed that day Susan was praying!!!

We are approved for one or TWO (if there are twins) babies from China. It was awesome because I was able to go around (at midnight!) and tell my wonderful agent Janet Grant and some of my friends.

It was a special, and unexpected, gift--both the paperwork and that God chose THERE to let me hear the news and share it face-to-face with those who have been praying!

The process is still 2 more years, but I know God's timing is perfect!

Live Laugh and Love

I am sure that these photos will make even the sternest of people smile.

My sister and I (Lesley.... I must specify) have this 'thing'. We throw our heads back and laugh. For no reason really, other than the fact that we have a camera in our face.

First we do the fake laugh but it ALWAYS turns into a full fledged tailspin of a laugh attack where we end up in tears because we are laughing so hard.

Call me crazy!

People think I'm crazy ... seriously they do. I can't tell them about all the book ideas I have or possible projects coming down the pipeline ... otherwise they'll start hyperventaling.

People may wonder why I write. Is it to get famous? No way. Because I enjoy living by one crazy deadline to another? Uh, no. Is it because I really enjoy asking my husband to pick up pizza on the way home ... or perhaps just as a way to make sure I never get a coffee date with friends? Not even close.

I write so much--so many different things--because I am compelled by the love of Christ. In fact when I was doing my Bible Study today one verse especially resonated with me:

"For the love of Christ controls and urges and impels me ..." 2 Corinthians 5:14 (Amplified)

That's not to say I love God more and so I write more. (Not even close!!!) BUT when I get a new idea--and when an opportunity comes up to write something that will glorify God, share His love, and encourage others in their relationship with Christ--I HAVE TO say Yes. I HAVE TO follow. My whole soul burns within me until I do. I know when God is asking me to join Him ... and it would be disobedient not to do so.

This is my path and mine alone. It's a path of obedience to the messages He places on my heart. A path of desperation, because I can't write ONE WORD without Him. It's a path of connecting with the family of God, as God brings others alongside me to help me. (And, boy, do I need help!)

It's also on this path on which I've experienced God in amazing ways, mostly become I'm expecting and anticipating Him to show up ... and He does! He always does.

I was studying my Experiencing God workbook this morning when I came upon this phrase, which is talking about quiet time with God: "I keep that time alone with God, not in order to have a relationship but because I have a relationship."

And even though writing is TOUGH, I truly feel it's an extension of my alone time with God. I don't write to make God happy, to get published, to drive everyone around me crazy, but rather because I have a relationship and the messages burn within me. As I just recently started telling my agent ... "I have been overcome with words!" They're words of hope, of healing ... words that are an outpouring of my quiet time with God.

So if I'm crazy, I'm in good company. In fact, I totally understand Paul when he said, "For if we are beside ourselves [mad, as some say], it is for God and concerns Him; if we are in our right mind, it is for your benefit, for the love of Christ controls and urges and impels us ..." 2 Corinthians 5:13-14 (Amplified).

So go ahead ... call me a crazy [mad] woman. I'll completely agree! Just please remember to pray for me, please :-)

Greetings from the ACFW Conference!

I have to say that I'm having way too much fun for this to be work ... as the photos show. Today I taught two hours on Historical Fiction. It went great ... the class was AMAZING. I wish we could meet weekly or something. What a great group of people.

I've also connected with many, many friends. It's like a reunion. I only get to walk five steps before I find someone else to hug.

Last night the keynote by James Scott Bell was great. If you write fiction be sure to check out his book Plot & Structure.

The only hard part ... is telling myself to sleep. I stayed up until 3:00 a.m. chatting with my roommate Robin Jones Gunn and waiting for my sister Melissa to have a baby. I have a new niece!!! Danielle Susan Renner. Welcome Danielle!

Okay, I think I'm going to try to take a nap before the partying begins again ... I mean before I have to get back to work.

P.S. The red lips came in a RETRO candy basket given to me (and the other Books and Such clients) by the agents Janet Kobobel Grant, Wendy Lawton, and Etta Wilson. Janet has been my amazing agent for aboug 10 years ... which reminds me to go check on our anniversary!

3:16 Teen Edition

Amy here, (Tricia's devoted assistant)! While Tricia is at ACFW, hob-nobbing with her friends and teaching classes, I thought I'd pop in and tell you about Tricia's latest project!

Max Lucado's new book 3:16 came out this month! Why am I telling you this? Well because Tricia was asked to co-write the teen edition of 3:16! It will be released in February 2008.

Below is a link to the video trailer for 3:16 The Numbers of Hope.

and here's some basic info From Amazon:

Book Description
Based on the beloved verse of John 3:16, Max Lucado brings insight to help teens apply this important teaching to their lives.

3:16 is certain to be one of Max's most important titles ever. The book is packaged with a white silicone bracelet with 3:16 printed for a dramatic effect and will be a tremendous conversation starter and outreach tool for teens.

Max offers his unique and simple storytelling for this important message while Tricia Goyer writes teen responses to Max's message, guiding teens to fully understand how this verse can impact their lives. From confession to praise, these responses are sure to bring an insightful look into the personal faith of teens.

Transformation!

I watch very little television. Perhaps it's because I'd rather read. Or (which is more likely) perhaps it is because there is a husband and three teens to share the television with. My favorite all time channel is HGTV. (You thought I was going to say the History Channel, didn't you?) Yes, I love history. But I love watching a good design show even more.

For the last few months, every Sunday night after church has meant one thing, "Design Star" . It's a mix of a reality show and a design program, and they winner of each season gets their own show on HGTV. If I wasn't so busy as a writer--and if it didn't mean being away from my family for so long--I might even try out for season three!

I'm sad to see the season ending. Sigh. I'm happy that Kim (who I voted for) won!

Personally, I think my choice of my favorite show says a few things about me. I like people. I like seeing them at work, seeing what makes them tick, seeing how they handle stress, success, failure, each other.

I like design. I like see transformation. I like color and style. I like nothing turning into something. (Sort of like books.)

I also like learning ... which in this case is about color, design, and personality.

What TV shows do you like? What do they say about you?

"Key" pals...

This week I'll be on the faculty of the ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writer's) conference where I'll be teaching a continuing track on Writing Historical Fiction. Last night, I was out to dinner with my husband and I told him, "Honey, do you realize that this week I'll meet many of my friends for the first time face-to-face." It seemed an odd concept. These are women who know all about me, and I know all about them. We critique each others' writing. We pray for each other. We offer encouragement. And many of them I've never met in person!

When I was younger have one pen pal was cool. Today, most of my associates are like pen pals ... or would it be key pals?

The generation connects in ways that we've never seen before. Personally, I know my life is better because of it. These women have made it better.

Hopefully by the end of the week this blog will host many photos. Photos of best friends ... hugging for the first time.

My Life, Unscripted Blog Tour

Has Begun!

Fans are giddy with excitement, My Life Unscripted is arriving in homes across the country!

Check out this stop on the tour from Home Steeped Hope:

You pick up a book, scan the back cover and it either grabs you or it doesn’t. When my influencer copy of My Life, Unscripted from Tricia Goyer arrived, the back cover copy jumped out at me and seconds later I was sinking into my couch, stealing enough time to confirm that this book is a definite keeper! Wait! Scratch that, it was SO good I made it a huge priority to finish before my niece’s 18th birthday party that weekend. I knew I had to pass it along. And as I read, I kept thinking of different teenage girls–nieces and friends–that would benefit with this warm and personal, yet hip, mentoring of Tricia’s in their hands.

What a Great Start! Thanks!

Tips for Writers: Business Cards

Tricia2007 We all know that first opinions are made in just a few seconds. It's scary to think that no matter what we do for marketing that it too will be judged quickly and decisively. Could this count for business cards, too?

This week I'll be heading to the ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers) conference in Dallas Texas. Since I was out of business cards, this was one of the things on my list. I knew I wanted to do something different ... something that would stand out. So I asked my photographer friend to help out. This is what Jessica came up with. You can click on them to get a better view.

Back_tg_copy_2

These are "folded" business cards. That means when they are folded they are the size of a normal business card. But when they're open they can actually be used as a bookmark! (What could be more perfect for a writer?)

My Freind Diann Mills has a new book, When the Nile Runs Red!
(this picture was taken by my friend, Charlotte at Christian Book & Gift Shoppe in Olathe, Kansas (suburb of K.C.) --notice the book next to Diann's!)

Here's the scoop on the book: Paul Farid, who once persecuted the southern Sudanese, now loves the weary people whose lives have been destroyed by war.

Colonel Ben Alier has led his battle-hardened soldiers for two decades against the North, yet he pursues a relationship with his son even as his own demons pursue him.

Dr. Larson Kerr Farid works long hours caring for the sick, but fatigue and worry about her husband, are taking their toll. And she’s just learned something that will make everything more complicated.

These three friends face constant danger as tensions escalate between the north and south, and as Paul’s family schemes to kill him and Larson. Will Paul and Larson bridge the gap that seems to grow between them? And will Ben find peace as more than a soldier?

When the Nile Runs Red is being used to raise awareness of the atrocities that are taking place in Sudan. Book sale proceeds will be donated to restore the Sudanese community.
Watch the promo here!

What reviewers are saying about When the Nile Runs Red:

"I cannot put into the appropriate words how truly amazing this novel was. I felt like my heart was being pulled in all different directions; I highly recommend this novel. You get to take a look into the current events in Sudan, see the love grow and flourish between Larson and Paul, and see the fate of Ben that will have you wipe a tear from your cheek. This book is an emotional rollercoaster that is worth reading again and again." - Ashley Denis for FrontPage Reviews

"Mills has created a masterpiece in the inspirational fiction, When the Nile Runs Red. Plenty of action scenes as well as twists and turns in the plot keep the reader engaged with the story. With real characters, real struggles, life-and-death situations and a present but not overwhelming inspirational theme, Mills has created a wonderful read." - Armchair Interviews says: Highly recommended. Lacy J. Williams

"The book is definitely hard to put down – I ended up reading it in one sitting because I couldn’t walk away! Beautiful, wholesome, and educational, When the Nile Runs Red is definitely an eye-opening read! DiAnn Mills excels at bringing a very worth cause to light while still maintaining her reputation as a best-selling author of fiction. Absolutely fantastic!" - Vicki Landes for Reader Views

When the Nile Runs Red is full of action and its characters are unique and engaging. Even minor characters are carefully developed and Mills balances effectively description, back-story, action, dialogue and introspection. From its tense opening scene to its dramatic finish, the book’s plot is well constructed. The momentum never falters and the various political, personal and spiritual conflicts all meet and resolve at the conclusion. Readers who enjoy Christian fiction and those who enjoy adventure stories will find plenty to like in this book and they will probably find it hard to put aside once they’ve begun reading." - Evelyn Sears

"With its apropos title When the Nile Runs Red is a deep look at the atrocities occurring in the Sudan. The three prime players are fully developed and feel heroically genuine so that their encounters provide a realistic graphic glimpse at humanity’s darkened soul. Although there is a bias towards Christianity as the benevolent religion vs. the alleged harshness of Islam, readers will be stunned by the powerful vivid exposé of genocide." - Harriet Klausner

Endorsers:

When the Nile Runs Red has all the earmarks of a great novel—a hold-your-breath plot, larger-than-life characters, with a beautiful thread of hope and valor woven through—all handled with DiAnn Mills’ accomplished voice. A victorious follow-up to When the Lion Roars."

––Deborah Raney, author of Remember to Forget and A Vow to Cherish

“DiAnn Mills is a masterful storyteller who’s written a powerful tale of love, faith, and courage that could have been plucked from today’s headlines. When the Nile Runs Red puts a human face and heart on the suffering in the Sudan. This book is a must-read.”

—Mark Mynheir, author of The Void.

Q & A with the author - DiAnn Mills

1. What inspired you to write this novel?

I had previously written a nonfiction book about the Lost Boys of Sudan – Lost Boy No More. From that research, I wrote the novel When the Lion Roars, but the story would not let me go.

Through numerous interviews and extensive reading, I grew to love and admire the courageous Sudanese people and was burdened by their incredible needs. I had to bring them back in When the Nile Runs Red.

2. Why Sudan?

This country went through nearly two decades of civil war strife. In 1983, the northern government launched a holy war against the south. This grew out of the views of the Islamic north against the mostly Christian black African south. The war had three aspects: religion, politics, and oil. The atrocities committed against the southern people are too many to list, but the war was fought in the south through genocide.

3. How did you conduct your research?

I grabbed my backpack and sun screen and traveled to Juba, Sudan, the southern capital. There I stayed at a Christian compound and met with southern Sudanese from all walks of life: refugees, political leaders, and church leaders. I talked to as many people as I could, snapped pictures, and listened to what was being said.

4. Regarding your trip to Sudan, what touched you the most?

The incredible faith. I could look into a Sudanese’s eyes and see the pain of persecution and the hope of Jesus. Here, we say we love Jesus while we live in our huge homes, drive our fancy cars, are well-fed, are not hunted down for our faith, or are concerned about medical care. The Sudanese understand that all they have and need is Jesus.

5. Can you give us a brief description of your characters?

Paul Farid was once a Muslim who actively persecuted the southern people, but now he’s a Christian who flies dangerous missions into war-torn areas to deliver food and medical supplies.

Dr. Larson Kerr Farid risks her life to bring healing to the Sudanese. Just like her husband Paul, her life is often in danger. But there is a problem between her and Paul with no easy solution.

Colonel Ben Alier has been fighting and leading the southern army of Sudan for nearly two decades. Often referred to as a warlord, Ben fights his own demons.

The three are friends, an unlikely friendship forged by their love for Sudan.

6. How do you build your plots?

Always out of character with two simple words: what-if? John Gardner said to create the best possible characters and allow the worst possible things to happen to them. That says it all. It’s easy to coat our darlings with easy trials and struggles, but the hard stuff, the struggles that define the character are what have to happen. I’m a huge fan of Donald Maass and wouldn’t consider writing a paragraph without using techniques found in his books Writing the Breakout Novel and Writing the Breakout Novel Workbook.

7. What are you goals for this novel?

To increase awareness about the situation in Sudan and to share my passion for the Sudanese people through a compelling story.

The proceeds for this novel go back to aid the Sudanese.

8. What do you hope the readers will gain?

To lose themselves in the novel. That’s every writer’s goal. But I also want the reader to sense a call to action and support the Sudanese cause.

9. What is your next project?

I’m currently writing a romantic suspense series with a working series title of “Behind the Sunglasses”.

10. How can readers learn more about what you are doing?

Check out my website at www.diannmills.com. I have sections about Sudan, and for readers, and writers. Those signing up for my newsletter get to download a chapter of an upcoming release.

11. Aside from your passion for writing, what else are you doing?

Speaking to groups about the situation in Sudan.

Teaching at writer’s conferences.

Conducting Fiction Mentoring Clinics. These are small groups who work closely together for three work-filled days to develop their craft.

Sushi for One?

Hi! I’m Camy Tang, also known by my friends as the loud Asian chick. (I’m not really THAT loud, they just like to give me grief!)

Tricia asked me to talk about what it’s like to get my first novel published, and my writing journey to get here. My first novel coming out is, natch, a dream come true for me. But more than that, it’s a benediction from God.

When I first started writing years ago, I was more interested in fame (my name on a book!) and fortune (boy was I naïve) than in serving God and bringing Him glory with my stories. So God asked me to give up my writing.

I resisted for a loooooong time. But there’s no way to win against God when He commands us to do something, and so eventually, I did it. Went cold turkey. Put away my manuscripts, my story idea notes, my computer disk backups.

I must have been in complete denial because I became a biologist, of all things.

But, with the way the world (specifically the San Francisco bay area) works, I got laid off from my job. And then God told me that I could write again.

Yup, just like that. He didn’t have to tell me twice.

I got a lot of rejections. I did a lot of work in learning the writing craft and about the publishing business and market. I got even more rejections. I had the meanest contest judge comments you’d ever seen. I got still more rejections. My husband told me to suck it up when I whined too much.

And then Zondervan said they were taking my story to editorial committee. Talk about stress. Then they said they were taking it to pub board. I thought I was stressed before, but it was nothing compared to the waiting this time.

And then my harried agent called me. It was The Call. And my life has not been the same since.

Moral of the story: Submit to God. Be ready to suffer—a lot. And if you’re in His will, it’ll happen. He knows what’s best for us.

Sushi for One came out September 1st, but it’s been years in the making—God making the right attitudes in me, the right skills I needed, the right people in line to get it published. It’s a fun, flirty, fluffy read that I hope you’ll enjoy!

Tricia, thanks so much for letting me jabber on your blog!

Oh, and comment on Tricia's blog in the next week and you'll be entered into a drawing to win your very own copy of Sushi for One! Woo-hoo!

I'm Nice?

Jill at The Christian Work at Home Mom's blog tagged me with a "Nice Award"! Check it out here! And so did Julie Carobini, here!

“This award is for those bloggers who are nice people; good blog friends and those who inspire good feelings and inspiration. Also for those who are a positive influence on our blogging world."

Really, that is too sweet! I'm not that nice!

My turn...

My assistant Amy because she is the cape, wires, and wind on my superwoman costume.

My friend Cara because she reads all my books as I write them and always encourages me.

My friend Robin Lee Hatcher because she is a awesome role-model and friend.

My sister Lesley because she always tells me I'm cute. (Maybe it's because I look like her.)

My friend Jim because he also reads all my books and is a great-undiscovered writer who cares for others above himself.

Thank you my dear friends and fellow "nice" people!

Meet my friend Lisa Bergren!

Lisa was one of the first people to encourage me to pursue writing!

She was born here in Kalispell (where I live now)!

She now lives in Colorado, but she comes back to Kalispell during her summers for a visit! I love her visits. This year we got together with another of our writer friends and had a "laughing lunch"! (You know...a lunch where you spend the entire time laughing!)

Lisa has 2 books in her The Gifted series being released this month. The Begotten (book 1, paperback) and The Betrayed (book 2, hardback) will be in Target this fall in their Breakout Books section! AWESOME! I am so excited for her!

You can find out more about Lisa at website!
And you can visit her blog tour here!

I Can Juggle...

I interrupt my work to drop a short note ... I can juggle! Seriously I can!

Currently, I'm working on not one, not but TWO Galleys. (A galley is the pre-published version of a book in which the author and editors work on the last tweaks.) I'm working on galleys for 3:16 Teen Version (Max Lucado) and for Generation NeXt Marriage. I also got edits back for my next novel A Whisper of Freedom.

Oh, oh, oh ... and just this week I received author copies of A Shadow of Treason AND My Life, Unscripted. It was wonderful to hold these books in my hands!

So just call me the juggling author ... of course the only way I can do this is with the strength and wisdom of God. He keeps me afloat!

Chapter One

No one told the rescuers not to talk, yet instinctively they sifted through the bits of brick and shards of glass as quietly as possible, alert for the slightest sound of human life beneath the rubble of the tailor shop.

Deion Clay paused for a minute and wiped his brow with a soot-blackened handkerchief. He refused to look at the other buildings surrounding him, reduced to heaps. The sight caused a deep ache in his gut. All he knew was underneath this pile a few families had taken refuge in the basement.

Deion had been walking through the streets sometime in the night, offering help to the injured, when he heard the cries for help. And although they had fallen silent for the past few hours, he clung to the faintest hope. It was all he had.

Though hundreds of rescuers had swarmed the area last night, fighting the flames, most citizens from Guerni
